This graphic essay concerns one particularly devastating event during World War II in which a school was mistakenly bombed by the U.S. Air Force. 184 Milan schoolchildren, known thereafter as "The Little Martyrs of Gorla," were killed. The text is a retelling of events with an eye to historical and geographical context. The drawings are based on architectural details from the streets and buildings surrounding the site of the disaster. Together, they form a narrative that allows readers to draw their own conclusions about this still painful tragedy.
